Our History

Our History

Roy Allen Green saw at a young age that there was a need for a funeral home in Appalachia.  His father owned a general store where caskets were sold. He would deliver those caskets to the home of the deceased in preparation for burial.  Roy attended Cincinnati College of Mortuary College and graduated in 1929.  Upon his return, Roy planned to open his own funeral home. In January 1931 he got his opportunity and the funeral home, which bears his name was born.  Roy operated out of the Appalachia Hardware Building from 1931 until 1947 when the funeral home was relocated to its current location on Kilbourne Avenue.

In 1960 Roy's son, Sam Green followed in his father's footsteps and graduated from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science.  Sam dedicated his life to the community of Appalachia and worked at Green's Funeral Home until 2020.

Eddie Green joined the family business as a licensed funeral director in 1971 after graduating from Kentucky School of Mortuary Science. He has continued to serve as Funeral Director, Embalmer, and Owner for over 50 years.

Sammy Green Jr. (Roy's grandson) joined the family business in 1983 after graduating from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service. He has served as Funeral Director, Embalmer, Manager, and Owner in his tenure at the firm.

Today, Lee Green (Roy's great-grandson), along with his father and great-uncle continue to serve Wise County to ensure that our communities continues to receive compassionate, hometown care through one of life's most difficult transitions.
